Beaches

The seafront is close to shops, cafés and town toilets. Pet dogs are not permitted on East Looe Beach at any time of year. Beach space changes with the tide. The promenade is easier for wheels than the sand; check local access and sea conditions on arrival.

Facing the sea from the promenade, turn left and continue to the steps at the far end. The dog-friendly shore beyond is distinct from the main sandy beach’s year-round dog ban. It has rocks, pools and sandy patches at low tide; space and access can disappear as the tide rises. Uneven ground and steps make it unsuitable for pushchairs. Check tides and signs before visiting.

Walk across the bridge and around West Looe to Hannafore. Dogs are welcome all year. Bring grippy shoes: seaweed-covered rocks can be slippery. Cafés and toilets are nearby, with seasonal opening hours. The promenade is paved, but access onto the shore is uneven.

The beach is privately managed. Welcome to Looe lists dog access from 1 October to 30 April; check the operator’s current signs before visiting. Check beach access, parking and facilities before travelling; do not rely on café or watersports availability. The coast path from Looe includes steep stretches and is not a pushchair route.

Dogs are welcome all year. Expect a mix of sand, shingle and rocks, with more space at low tide. Café facilities are nearby, but check seasonal hours. Parking is limited and the approach lanes are narrow. For a coastal walk from Looe, allow around 1¾–2¼ hours each way and expect hills.

Park at the National Trust Lantic Bay car park and cross the fields before the very steep descent and steps. The return climb is demanding; unsuitable for pushchairs and visitors who need an easy-access beach. Bring water and a picnic. Dogs are welcome; the Trust asks for short leads to protect wildlife. Strong currents mean this is a beach for enjoying the scenery rather than assuming safe swimming.

The main pay-and-display car park is approximately 200 metres above the beach, with a downhill walk and uphill return. Public toilets, the Rashleigh Inn, Sam’s on the Beach and watersports facilities are nearby; check opening times and book activities with the operator. Dogs are permitted from 1 October until Good Friday; a beach dog ban runs from Good Friday to the end of September. A beach wheelchair can be booked through the operator. There is no lifeguard service.

Hoodny Cove lies west of the harbour; Finnygook Beach is to the east. Parking and a café are nearby. Expect uneven shore access and slippery rocks, and check tides before exploring. Cornwall Council lists dog bans at Hoodny Beach and Portwrinkle Harbour from 1 July to 31 August, 10am–6pm. Check the signs for your chosen cove, especially at Finnygook, rather than assuming the same rule covers every part of Portwrinkle.
